As part of FPA’s overall advocacy strategy, FPA Advocacy Day will involve members from around the country in a day-long series of meetings with their elected officials and leaders on financial services committees. While the meetings will focus on creating greater recognition of FPA and financial planners on The Hill, it will provide members with valuable training and experience they can take back to their FPA chapters to continue advocacy efforts within their local governments.
“This is an opportunity to display FPA’s strength as the association for all CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) professionals, advocate for issues that impact the profession and consumers, and bolster our advocacy efforts within our network of chapters,” said Lauren M. Schadle, CAE, FPA executive director and CEO. “We look forward to welcoming FPA members from across the country to our nation’s capital this summer in a collaborative effort to strengthen relationships and advance the recognition of the financial planning profession.”
All participants will take part in a training program before the event to help them prepare for meetings with lawmakers. A media roundtable will also be held on June 23rd to bring members of the media up to speed on Advocacy Day events, general FPA advocacy efforts, and issues impacting the profession.
“The initial response by our members to the Advocacy Day program has been tremendous,” said Karen Nystrom, FPA’s advocacy director. “With states considering legislation that impacts financial planning professionals and the clients they serve, we view this program as a means of training our members to be advocates of FPA and the public.”
As the association for more than 23,000 financial professionals – including nearly 16,000 CFP® professionals – FPA advocates on behalf of its members and the profession at the federal level while
providing the necessary support for chapters and members to take action locally. By developing turnkey programs and resources, FPA seeks to empower our membership and the more than 90 chapters.
“We look forward to further developing the Advocacy Day program and sharing new developments with our members, the media and others who are supporting the profession,” added Schadle.
In an effort to boost awareness of the Financial Planning Association® (FPA®) and the financial planning profession among policymakers nationwide, FPA volunteer leaders and members will arrive in Washington, D.C. on June 24, 2014 for the organization’s first Advocacy Day in 14 years.
